People don't sing when they're feeling sensible

...said W H Auden; a perfect line for Moppet's Papa and me. We're sensible - even practical - about us, and our relationship. We're not romantic at all. Really. Remember the proposal?

But we do have our moments - completely uncharacteristic, slightly goofy, sometimes cheesy, almost-romantic moments. The song story is one such. It doesn't quite qualify as 'our song' - we don't have one - but it's the most likely candidate for this tag.

Now, Moppet's Papa guards his no-nonsense, no-time-for-romance image fiercely, so for the few people who know him that are reading this - please know that this was a very, very, rare occurrence, an aberration, if you will and there have been no further slips in this regard.

It was at the Marketing Fair at B-School, a weekend affair where folks come and play specially designed games that are supposed to work as consumer research. Then we crunch the collected data and draw out (or make up ;-) deep-sounding insights and conclusions and present fancy reports to the sponsors and profs. It is set up as a fair and along with the various project booths, there are the usual food stalls, fair games, a jukebox etc.

So there I was in my booth when suddenly I heard Moppet's Papa's voice blaring out through the loudspeakers with a sweet little message and a song dedication for me. I nearly died of shock. I know that this won't seem like a big deal to many people, but it really was for me because Moppet's Papa is a very private person, and what he did that day was so completely out of character that it could only have meant one thing - he was crazy in love! Certainly not feeling sensible! :-p

Oh and the song? I Want You by Savage Garden.

Tagging anyone who has a song and would like to share it.

oooo wow. That's so cute. Definitely romantic. I can imagine your shock, because R is not an overt in these respects himself....so I can imagine your being taken by surprise. Its a nice song. Full energy song!

Choxbox: Yup, although if you told me back then - bleary eyed at 3 am, arguing with group mates on what should/not go into the report - that I'd look back on those days with fondness I'd have called you insane!

Mala: I just realised that you were also a sort of co-conspirator in his other great romantic moment - when he had flowers sent to me for my birthday during our summers in Delhi! Now that's something you wouldn't have thought of yourself as would you - cupid's assistant! LOL!

Mansij: Hi, I think the marketing fair is now hosted by several B-schools in some avatar or another. I'm from one in Ahmedabad.

MM: You know, I think that's his cleverest strategy - to be so unromantic that even the smallest gesture completely knocks my socks off. Got to hand it to him, it works, and he only needs to do something like this every 5 years or so!

Sunita, Utbtkids: Yeah, it was a major shock! :-)

Tharini, Squiggles Mom: You know how the lyrics go?
Ooh I want you,
I don't know if I need you,
But ooh, I'd die to find out.

Not subtle at all! LOL!

Kiran: Really? Do tell, waiting for your email!

Rbdans: Pleasant yes, although at the time I thought I was having a stroke! ;-)

Gosh. I'm certainly getting old..I'd completely forgotten about the flowers bit as well. Though somehow the episode where the boss's CD started playing LOUDLY in the middle of the office is very clear in my memory :-)

Wow - incredible. Your story is soo romantic...am sure you have more hidden gems of this sort accumulated over the years you have been together! :)

Ho ho ho... LOL, actually!

I think it was a very sweet gesture from a private person. From any person at all.

Wow! So utterly lovely!

I can imagine how I'd feel if the baby did something like this! He's a gooey romantic, but a public declaration of love would probably shock me into hiding under the table!

Listening to 'I want you'. Boy oh boy, I thought Savage Garden were nice and romantic but this one ROCKS! Nothing subtle about it, hey? :D.

BTW check my blogsie pliss! pliss pliss pliss! Here.

Itchy: Thanks! :-)

Mala: Yeah, but you had no reason to remember, really. The CD, though, that's different! ;-)

Noon: Way too few, I'm afraid.

Sue: It was, which is why I didn't quibble over his choice of song!

Suki: In retrospect, yes. At that time, I thought I'd die :-) Oh, and thank you so much for the thingy!

:-D Itching to hear the lyrics, but in my new office, I'm being rather circumspect the first few days :-D
sometimes they do do things to sweep us off our feet, don't they? Esp. in those heady young times of budding romance...
